Drs. Robert Bryan and Jeremy Goodson of Oral Surgery Specialists of Oklahoma have announced the final recipient for their third annual charitable Second Chance program. Shannon, 49, of Perkins, was selected out of nearly 900 applicants to receive a free smile makeover. The Second Chance program was offered to residents in the Oklahoma City community during the month-long application period where individuals could apply for the opportunity to receive a free full-arch restoration treatment valued at $50,000. Those in the community who suffer from broken, decayed, and missing teeth who do not have the means to afford the extensive procedure were encouraged to submit their stories.
Growing up without dental insurance and periodontal disease, Shannon struggled with her dental health throughout her whole life and currently has no remaining teeth. Shannon, a mother of three, has overcome much more than losing all her teeth. In 2008, Shannon’s oldest son tragically committed suicide, and the hardship of losing him eventually corroded her marriage and brought her to Oklahoma. Shannon struggled a lot after the death of her son and stopped caring about her health, which eventually caused her to lose all of her remaining teeth. Despite the horrible tragedy in her family, Shannon has learned to cope with this loss and is now happily remarried and working as an Animal Control Specialist. When asked how the surgery would change her life, Shannon said, “We have not had family photos taken since the passing of my first son, and I would love to be able to smile in the photos. If I received a new smile, it would be the most amazing gift anyone could ever give me.”
Oral Surgery Specialists of Oklahoma will be collaborating with restorative partner Dr. Michael Fling of OKC Dental Arts, who will assist in the procedure by creating a custom-designed prosthesis for Shannon. The prosthesis is supported by dental implants, which the oral surgeons will use to place a new full-arch that will look and feel like natural teeth. Oral Surgery Specialists of Oklahoma is also partnering with Nobel Biocare to complete the procedure and give the recipient a smile they deserve.
